Our Kids Jiu-Jitsu Program keeps making us proud.

This past Saturday, April 28th, our friend Cleber Luciano has hosted the 21st Copa Pacifica Tournament and like every year we take a team to represent our School and San Pedro. We want to say thank you for students for going out there and battling it out fiercely and leaving it all on the mat and also thank the parents for trusting us with the safety and well-being of their children on our Martial Arts Program.

The kids mostly had a rough patch this time and we took the tournament as a lesson learned. We all must train hard and stay focus daily in order to keep getting better. Although like every year we make champions this time was no different – Quinn Cook (8) scored 1st place on his very first tournament.

Thank you all again for showing up and fighting hard and showing an immense amount of heart.

Wow! It has been too long again since last post. Ma bad…

The funny thing is… the last post was about the In House Tournament, held here at our School, and this post now is also about the San Clemente In House Tournament, held at our “mothership” the Guillobel BJJ Academy. Once again San Pedro was well represented in San Clemente by 9 of our students. Our team scored 3 golds out of 4 divisions and we couldn’t be any prouder. Everyone fought hard regardless of the finishing results.

Thank you all that took your precious time, on a Saturday morning and battling on the mats of Sensei Guillobel’s Academy. You all looked great and I’m sure you came out of there a better person and athlete.

Special shout out to Eddie McKenna (Hey Day Fitness San Pedro), 31, for scoring 1st place in his division with only about a month of training. Great exciting matches!

Below a couple more pics from our awesome Saturday morning.

On June 17th, our 8th Annual In House took place at our School and it was an awesome turn out. Every year we invite a couple different academies and gather on our mats for a friendly competition with the objective of exposing the students to the competition environment and experience, as well as testing their skills on a safe and controlled environment.

The competition started at 9am with the white belts and it was full of action and awesome matches. The highlight of the morning really was the women bracket made out of our students and they really put on the show. An awesome display of heart and technique. At 11am the Blue belts started and they took over the mats with more great matches.

Here some pictures of the action:

San Pedro locals bring lots of medals from Jiu-Jitsu Tournament in Huntington Beach.

This past weekend our friend Cleber Luciano and his wife Lili hosted for the 20th consecutive year the Copa Pacífica of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Huntington Beach at Ocean View High School.

We want to congratulate all students, the ones that fought and represented our School flag and the rest of them for training hard and helping prepare their teammates.

On Saturday the 22nd, Jarry S. (14) took 1st place after defeating by 2 wins, in a best out of 3, against a green belt. Jarry had total domination on both matches and came out with the gold to bring back to San Pedro. On the podium Jarry stood by himself after his opponent refused to go get his 2nd place medal. Carlos L. (12) had a tough match and ended up with 2nd place.

On Sunday the 23rd was the adults white and blue belts turn to get their battles on. The first one on deck was Tobin Woodley on the Masters White belt Light weight division. Tobin took 1st place, had 3 matches and totally rolled them all up. First match cross collar choke from mount position, second match a beautiful 15 seconds arm bar from closed guard and final match won by lots of points and no points scored against.

Jose Martinez was the next one on deck, Maters White belt Middle weight division, and scored 2nd place by defeating the first opponent by guillotine choke and loosing the final on the sudden death. Erin Donnelly also took 2nd place in the Women Masters White belt Super Feather weight division.

Our Army Major Hal Shannon Howerton, Blue Belt heavy weight, scored 1st place after defeating both of his opponents and finishing the final match by Submission (Americana). Gary Mikaelian scored 3rd place via guillotine choke on the 3rd place bout for the Master II blue belt light weight division.

We also would like to thank Biagia Nguyen and Bryan Castillo for coming out and competing. The results were not how we expected but they fought their butt off and kept their head up.

Thank you all once again and stay tuned!

The Blue Belt Team is growing

Congratulations to Dylan Bruno on his Blue Belt promotion. Dylan had been watching his boys, Odin and Damian, for several months from the sidelines at the kids classes and finally decided to join us in our Adult Program. Dylan was a great addition to the family and we are very happy to see the Bruno’s on their journey to black belt.

This post is also an invitation to all parents of our students to come and take a class with Sensei. Easy pace, learn at your speed kind of class. We hope to see you on the mat…
